The relationship between oral health behaviors and sociodemographic characteristics in Korean adolescents

Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the oral health behavior and demographic characteristics of adolescents in order to provide information on how to disseminate the correct oral health behavior to youth and develop programs for that approach.

Methods: The raw data of ¡®The Third 2007 Youth Health Behavior Online Survey¡¯ carried out by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention were analyzed. All survey data collected was processed using SPSS ver 12.0 for data analyses such as frequency analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and chi-square.

Results: The demographic characteristics of the adolescents investigated revealed significant differences in their oral health behavior(p<0.001). In particular, there were significantly difference in toothbrushing according to gender and grade(p<0.001). In addition , there were significant differences in the frequency of visiting a dental clinic between genders, grades, residential areas(urban/rural) and types of school(p<0.001). There were significant differences between grades, residential areas and types of school in terms of whether they had received preventive dental treatment (p<0.001).

Conclusions: Adolescents who were in the lower grades, female and dwelled in large urban communities visited dental clinics more and received more preventive dental treatment. On the other hand, those who resided in small urban and rural areas visited dental clinics less often and received less preventive dental treatment. These result highlight the need for the further development and spread of oral health programs.
